It used to be combined with a grand or upright piano which was moved to a higher position. String choirs run underneath the pedal keyboard which are struck by a hammer mechanism on the far end. Such a “Pedal under the Grand Piano” was rented by Robert and Clara Schumann in the spring of 1845 so that they could practice playing the organ.

I wonder how one would use the damper pedal with this foot keyboard!

Playing the organ is quite different from playing the piano.

BORGATO - HANDCRAFTED CONCERT-GRAND PIANOS
Lilylady, regarding the pedals on the previous pedal piano, this terribly high-end niche pedal piano - the Borgato from Italy does have the normal piano pedals. However, what I am not sure about is why I can count 5 of them...

The other amazing thing about the Borgato is that it has a flotilla of tuning pins and a sea of strings, it has 4 rather than the usual 3 unisons per note.

Daniel Mayer Resonator Piano.
An upright piano in a case fitted with a rare Erard patent Resonator. As described in 'The Piano A History' by Cyril Ehrlich pages 115 - 116 and the Daily Mail & Empire article dated 17th December 1895.

That barrel piano above, I was just looking at it again and thinking, what a neat period piece, take note of the mirrors, all etched; then there is the wheel - this machine looks like it could be something from the early days of motoring...:-)
