RF, is that your Steinway? I came this close () to owning an 1874 S&S square. Some bastidge outbid me on it for the legs and pedal lyre. If I end up with the case, I guess I'll make a desk out of it.

Yep, that's mine. Ain't she purty? 1864. I read your story. It was heartbreaking.

RF, it's beautiful. You and Joe have a couple of quintessential good squares, IMNSHO. If you ever need any action parts for yours, I'd wager the parts from "mine" would suffice, so let me know.

I'd bet they would. It hasn't had any work done on it since the 60s (1960s that is), and I'm afraid to have somebody who doesn't really love them work on it. Haven't found the right person yet. But finding parts will definitely be one of the challenges. The other challenge will be finding another place for all the

How does it play? How do you feel it compares with more modern pianos?

"One half of me is a hopeless romantic, the other half is so damn realistic." Beatification Candidate |
It doesn't really. The action is loose, and I've got a few sticking keys and 3 that don't sound. It's about a half step out of pitch, although somebody told me they don't necessarily tune them to 440. So, it isn't really even possible to compare them. But, she takes a nice picture....

Yes indeed, you wan to find a tech who will love it. For the three that don't sound, do they just make a click? If so, you probably have broken hammer shanks - they're bird-like in construction. If the sticky keys are adjacent to the non-sounding keys, it may be the broken off shank and hammer are the cause, but you never know. Somebody was somewhat correct about the tuning. It was originally tuned to A435 instead of A440, and it should be kept at A435.
