Reading the money saving tips thread is strange to me. I never use software or a spreadsheet to track expenses, because , because apparently I was born with an accountant’s brain. I know at all times exactly what I spend every month on everything, exactly what all my investments earn each month, and exactly what’s happening to the balances of each my bank accounts and investment accounts at all times. I have never bought anything without mentally calculating the cost per unit or ounce. This is apparently a portion of my brain I cannot turn off, it is always there. So, just to annoy everybody, my problem is this. I am retired, sort of, and have predictable income in excess of what I spend. But my lifetime of habits is to still be careful of every single dollar I spend. So my question for the crowd, what have you spent/wasted money on, that was clearly a splurge, that was totally worth it to you? Besides pianos, which I’m guessing we would all agree on… I might have to start slow, like eating at lunch someplace that doesn’t offer senior discounts…

I just bought a pound of lobster meat from Wild Fork Foods. If you haven't used them they have a lot of really high quality stuff at reasonable prices. In Chicago or Miami you can just go to their stores. I pay $10 for delivery which is fine as I do fairly large orders.

I had never heard of wild Fork foods, so I assumed it would not deliver out to the boondocks where I live. Apparently they do! I’m gonna take a look at it.

Buy a boat. To do it right, buy and old classic that is due for a extensive renovation. This strategy has been best described as standing in a cold shower tearing up thousand dollars bills. Sold the boat for a pittance in the spring. The buyer could easily persuaded me to pay him to take it if he had only known.

Back when I still owned horses because my son was riding, I was considering buying a boat to keep it on. It was the only way I could think of to spend even more money…

Buy a house on acreage in a real estate dead zone and build a *really* expensive barn. And put in an outdoor arena. On a hillside. I win.

Can’t you offset this with the cost savings related to moving frequently?

A strong argument. Do we need a contest for WTFer of the month who spent too much again?

Buy a cheap piano… or even better, get one for free… then try to make it sound like a Steinway. Buy a Range Rover and try to keep it running for ten years. Try to get health care in the U.S. Especially for something like cancer or kidney disease.
