Can you imagine how impossible it will be to sell any older condo unit now?

If I’d doesn’t collapse and crush you to death, you will have a massive assessment for inspection and repairs. And no insurer will touch it, and no buyer could get financing.

I wonder if someone owners will just walk away.

This is just heartbreaking.

quote:
The death toll in the Miami-area condo building collapse rose to 46 Wednesday after workers extricated 10 more victims from the rubble, authorities said.

Mayor Daniella Levine Cava fought back tears as she made the announcement, in English and Spanish, adding that 32 of the victims had been identified and their family members notified.

"Our commitment to this mission is deeply personal," Levine Cava said of the rescue teams that have been working around the clock for two weeks. "We are so grateful to these every-day heroes. They are superheroes."

More than 90 people remain unaccounted for, she said. Detectives were working to determine whether all the missing were actually in the Champlain Towers South building when it fell.

It sure is. Frowner

I was thinking about all the stories of people being rescued alive from rubble... But say it was an earthquake, usually the building sways and then falls to the side. Lots more open spaces. This time, it just pancaked straight down. I can't imagine how there could possibly be anyone rescued alive at this point.

Gut wrenching but a reality. At least the families can move to the next phase of mourning.

All so sad... Frowner

Oh good grief. Why hasn't this building been condemned?

A tiny bit of good news.

quote:
Binx the cat, who had lived on the ninth floor of the South Florida condo building that collapsed last month, has been found safe and returned to its family, officials said Friday.

Gina Nicole Vlasek, co-founder of The Kitty Campus, posted on Facebook that a black cat resembling Binx was found near the rubble of the Surfside building Thursday night and brought to the group’s nearby facility in Miami Beach. A former Champlain Towers South resident visited The Kitty Campus on Friday and confirmed that the feline was hers, Vlasek said.

“We are so grateful to be able to help in any small way,” Vlasek wrote.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said during a news conference Friday evening that Binx was recognized by a volunteer who had been feeding cats near the collapsed building.

“I’m glad that this small miracle could bring some light into the lives of a grieving family today and could provide a bright spot for our whole community in the midst of this terrible tragedy,” Levine Cava said.

Hundreds of victims of the deadly collapse of a Surfside condo building could expect to see compensation in the near future, as a Miami-Dade Circuit judge Wednesday approved the planned sale of the oceanfront property, valued at more than $100 million, as well as the disbursement of millions more in insurance payments for property and personal damages.

Circuit Judge Michael Hanzman told a courtroom packed with civil attorneys that he wanted to start the process of putting the site of the partially collapsed 12-story Champlain Towers South up for sale immediately. He also wants the court-appointed receiver for its condominium association to begin disbursing millions of dollars in insurance payments to former owners of the 136-unit building.

Hanzman ruled out the possibility of converting the entire Champlain property to a memorial site because any potential sale for that purpose would not generate much money for the victims of the collapse.

$100 mil for a piece of badly reclaimed swampland with a sordid history, any number of underground structures that will have to be removed, issues with the construction of the building next door, in an area prone to flooding and known to be sinking.

That's chutzpah right there!

Will you be installing granite countertops? Promise that and you’ll have half the units pre sold before you even break ground!

Big Grin

On a more serious note, Reagan said government is the problem, not the solution. Many people in the US believe this. I think if we add these people to the number who are confused, at best, about the role of government, it might go a long way toward explaining collapsing buildings, infastructure, etc.
