Pop-Up Piano Receives Surprise Visitor
NEW YORK—Mayor Michael Bloomberg briefly played one of the 88 pianos, which are a part of the world’s largest street piano installation, on Monday under the Manhattan Bridge in Brooklyn. The 88 pianos are on display through Saturday.

Each piano was painted uniquely by volunteer artists, including many professionals like fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi, as well as two high school classes. Just in case of rain, the pianos come with tarps.

One of the artists, Olek from Poland, decorated the piano Bloomberg played on with crochet, her chosen art medium.

Love the butterfly, hate the crochet!

Are the pianos on display from LAST YEAR?

Poul Henningsen Grand Piano Concept by Poul Henningsen
Brilliant and crystal clear, that’s the sound promised to you coming from Poul Henningsen Grand Piano. A unique piano designed in 1931 yet still belongs to the future. As you can see here, it’s not your conventional grand piano, it features light and open design that was based on the conversation with famous Danish Jazz pianist, Leo Mathiesen. Mathiesen told Henningsen about how hard to see his bass player while on stage due to the opaque wooden piano lid. So, Henningsen designed a piano with curved legs to provide more room for percussion instruments in an ensemble set-up, the music desk was uniquely molded to match the lid as single transparent shell.

Make your own music envelops

Method . . .
Gently deconstruct the used envelope. You will use this as a template to trace the newer, prettier one you're making.
Trace around the envelop with your pencil on what will be the the INSIDE of the envelope you're making.
Carefully cut around your template. Erase any pencil marks still left behind.
Fold everything over in an envelope-like fashion (again, using the old envelope for inspiration), and then secure using double-sided tape.
