That picture reminds me of a story that a client told me..... Before I was the tuner, she called her previous tech in a panic. Her daughter had just come home from college and brought her harp. They put them roughly in the configuration of the picture because they had some duets they were going to play. The reason for the call? Before they were practicing together, the mom was going over her part and realized that the dampers must not be working on the piano.... the sound just kept ringing on and on! Of course when the tech came out, he found out that it was the HARP strings that were ringing in sympathetic vibration to the piano! That story saved me once when I got a similar call about a single note that wouldn't damp. It turned out to be a little folk guitar-type instrument propped up in the corner under the piano... I think this looks like a fun place to play!

Hey ron, that's an interesting story. Here's a question for you. My CW upright is too loud. It's sitting perpendicular to my open 1864 Steinway square grand. Is it possible that the second piano's soundboard is vibrating, making everything louder?

Really doubtful, I would think..... Drape a heavy quilt over the square and see if there is any difference. CW uprights can be..... efficient... in their sound production. Has it always been this way, or have you noticed a change? I have a rubber-backed plush rug firmly attached to the back of my 1920ish full upright to cut the volume a bit... Have you had any voicing done?

Hmmm...just wondered. It has been this way since I bought it used 2 1/2 years ago. I have an antique quilt hanging on the wall behind it, and I put it on a small oriental rug. I have had the hammers needled. It made a more muffled sound, for a while at least, but I still play with earplugs--otherwise it aggravates my tinitus. We haven't used hammer softener--I guess I should follow up with my tech. I've sort of learned to live with it, but your story about the harp got me thinking... Before the voicing I routinely got db readings in the 90s when playing in medium dynamic range...I haven't measured it lately though.

It may not be real Ron, but don't you wish it were?
