| A 1910 Linke/S&S art case: quote: The case by François Linke, the movement by Steinway & Sons, New York.
Linke model No.: 2400. Steinway Movement No.: 153457.
This piano is highly unusual in Linke's repertoire in that it is fitted with a movement by the world renowned Steinway & Sons; Linke's other pianos being fitted with movements by the Parisian firm of Erard. Christopher Payne in his book, 'Francois Linke, The Belle Epoque of French Furniture', illustrates this piano, pl. 541, and records it as being made for Antonio Devoto in 1912. Archive evidence would suggest that this was the only Linke piano fitted with a Steinway movement and was made for the Devotos as a 'pièce unique'.
Linke took his inspiration for this remarkable piano from the famous Bureau du Roi made for Louis XIV. The Bureau du Roi, one of the most celebrated items of furniture ever made, was to provide Linke with a vast array of design elements that he successfully adapted for many items of furniture. The Bureau du Roi, was originally designed by Jean-François Oeben, the master cabinet maker of the royal arsenal and was completed following his death in 1769 by his successor Jean Henri Riesener. This piano is directly based on the bureau incorporating directly, features such as the bronze lion pelt mounts, Wedgwood plaques and elaborate marquetry panels.
Count Don Antonio Devoto, although Italian by birth, made his home in Buenos Aires in the late Nineteenth Century and through financial and agricultural markets become one of the wealthiest men in Argentina. Much praised for his philanthropic activities he was highly regarded in his native Italy, and awarded the title of Count by the King.

The last I heard of the Scheidmayer Grands, is that they were still being built by Ibach. But that was about three or fower years ago, back when I was looking at a 183cm Schiedmayer that was for sale here. Up until they were being made by Ibach, Schiedmayer had the distinction of being one of the world's oldest manufacturers. Ibach used to maintain a page on their website outlining a history of Scheidmayer, but when I checked yesterday, it was gone. I did, however, find this creature on Ibach's pages. Not sure if it's been posted here before or not. It's certainly different, but I'm not saying I like it. Judging by the legs, isn't it a fair bet the one on the left is a Bosie? There ought to be a law against painting grands like that. I'm just sayin'... |
