Perhaps the last truly great album by the Rolling Stones (and has there ever been a better name for a band?)

Welcome this is a Farmhouse
We have cluster flies alas
And this time of year is bad
We are so very sorry,
There's little we can do
But swat them....

Just returned from the Met (Metropolitan Opera) where I heard Manon by Jules Massenet, the Met’s 252nd performance. Title roles were Renee Fleming, Marcello Alvarez, Jean-Luc Chaignaud, Julien Robbins and Jean-Paul Fouchecourt. Didn’t know Massenet could be so good or was it the performers? Manon, same character as in Manon Lescaut also used for an opera by Puccini, is a typical opera story; silly, romantic and tragic by turns. But the singing and the music and the occasion and the place were all comme il faut. Yes, that means exactly what I meant it to mean; it wasn’t over the top, extraordinary, outrageous, no sensory overload, nor an emotional tear jerker (she did die in the end as all bad little girls are supposed to do in operas), although it did convey everything required of the piece from the theatrical standpoint. Isn’t that more than enough? Too bad I didn’t have a nice pinot noir before going.

Jon, I would put the Chaconne on my 'list' as well. Is the Brahms' transcription for left hand alone very difficult?

If you haven't heard Eva Cassidy you owe it to yourself to listen. Buy this disk or another one and you won't be disappointed. She died at the age of 33 unknown and left behind some incredible recordings that far surpass Diana Krall or Norah jones, both of whom I like very much.

Had she lived, she would....

Really good jazz. Zoot Sims is one of my favorite sax players, and has the rare distinction of having a muppet named after him.

It takes a certain level of self-confidence in your abilities to allow your record company describe you as a colossus.
