Since we've moved, I'm looking for a tech. We're in Nyack, which is a northern suburb of NYC, fairly near the city.

I'll need ongoing tuning and maintenance, but I also need someone who can look at damage to the case done by the movers and either fix it or point us to someone who can. I'm on the fence now about trading it versus keeping it, but it needs to be repaired in any case.

Rich Galassini has been a great source of advice and he gave me a name, but the man hasn't called me back. Jon-NYC isn't answering his PMs. Somebody has to know a tech around here who wants to take care of a big ole forty-year-old Yamaha.

At some point, I'll share the hair-raising details of the piano's move, but I'm too emotionally scarred at the moment. Be prepared. The story will give the folks who frequent this place hives.

Oh no, MA, when I saw a brief comment from Quirt, and then you hadn’t posted, I was afraid of this! I am so, so sorry!

Re Jon, did you message him through FB? I can try that if you like.

I will also ask my older tuner, who I’m friends with on FB.

But fyi I know from him that the PTG Convention was just happening in Nevada from July 17 through the 20th, so could it be that the tuner you called was attending that?

Anyway, let me repeat, I am so, so sorry to hear this!

Mary Anna, my old tuner gave me a rec. the messaging function here is unreliable so I’ll send you a message on FB. (Hopefully it’s not the same one you’ve already tried to connect with!)

Try the established piano stores:

Faust Harrison - the official Yamaha dealer in the NYC area, around for a long time

Beethoven Piano - has been around for a long time, they sell used Yamaha too

Steinway Hall - if all else fail, why not give this a shot?

Nyack is a lovely community. Marc Wienert is on his way to NYC right now to take care of some clients' pianos. He lives in Raliegh now, but travels to wherever he can drive to. Don't know if he has room in his schedule. I can ask him if you like.

If I were looking for a recommendation for a tech in your area, the only person I would ask is Michael Harrison. He is going to know who the real talent is.

Your area is right near a hotbed of rebuilding talent. There must be terrific techs up there.

Michael Harrison is now working with Cantabile Piano Arts in Yonkers. He recently showed me around some of their pianos for sale. I only saw Steinways, but I bet they do work on other makes. Also, if you want to stay Yamaha-centric, Yamaha has a NYC headquarters; my own tech does work for them.

Cantabile is a fantastic shop. I have toured it and spent quite a bit of time with the rebuilders there. Call them.

The finish repair specialist it likely going to be someone different than the tech.

If the tech recommends from Jon or pique don't pan out, I know of some folks down that way.

Cantabile does rebuilding, so they can either do the job or refer MA to someone who will do a good job. They will certainly have good recommendations for tuners.

Finish repair is often done at some distance from the rebuilding facility because the noxious chemicals and fumes involved in refinishing would not be permitted in a populated area. Or so I’ve heard.
