They’d better be a legacy, a jock, or the kid of a donor. Otherwise, the odds are even smaller. https://slate.com/business/201..._socialflow_facebook

Here parents are counseled not to even apply if you’re a white non legacy. Too many legacies from Westchester.

Hey, I didn't get in to Harvard even when it was "easier." Then again, I think they still had a Jewish Quota in the 70s.

I didn't get in in the 70s either. And, of course, if I'd gotten in, I would have gone. But, truth be told, I was a little relieved. I really liked Cornell, and knew I'd be comfortable there.

Poor white kids. They cannot get a break.

The concern isn’t about ‘white kids’ so much as individual kids who happen to be white. But the individual kids who happen to be Asian are in much worse shape when it comes to admission at Harvard.

Federal judge rules Harvard does not discriminate against Asian Americans in admissions https://www.washingtonpost.com...70962db05_story.html

One white kid from my HS class went to Harvard. He was a jock. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

The judge's reasoning is interesting. The idea was that it is true that a lot of Asian kids with great grades and test scores get rejected. But the pool of admits to Harvard consists of people with great grades and test scores. So the fact that Asians get rejected isn't unusual or problematic because most or all admissions decisions at Harvard come down to intangibles for a lot of legitimate reasons, and seeking diversity is a legitimate reasons.

+1 TBH, I didn't think about applying to Harvard. It didn't occur to me.

Didn't occur to me either; they didn't have a strong music performance department.

Isn't that the same logic that drives most diversity initiatives? Absent any other distinctive attributes (in other words, in a pool of essentially equivalent candidates), selection to boost diversity is A-OK.

It never occurred to me to apply to Harvard. Knew my father would not permit it. He was very anti-elitist. Was tricked into attending another school. My sister was accepted into Cornell, my father refused to let her go that far away. We sent to Mizzou-rah-rah-rah.
