The idea was that it is true that a lot of Asian kids with great grades and test scores get rejected. But the pool of admits to Harvard consists of people with great grades and test scores.
So the fact that Asians get rejected isn't unusual or problematic because most or all admissions decisions at Harvard come down to intangibles for a lot of legitimate reasons, and seeking diversity is a legitimate reasons.

Isn't that the same logic that drives most diversity initiatives? Absent any other distinctive attributes (in other words, in a pool of essentially equivalent candidates), selection to boost diversity is A-OK.
