Lava fields going all the way down to the sea in Volcanoes National Park on Chain of Craters Road. Big Island. We rented a SUV and drove ourselves around the park. Saw more than any tour would show you. These were incredible, the picture cannot capture it adequately. The dark colors you see there are actually color differences in the lava. Further up close, the lava fields looked like a huge pan of brownies - smooth on the top, crumbly beneath.

Beautiful!

It is a stunningly beautiful place. One thing I found interesting was only one volcano system created all the islands, starting with Kauai, then it kept moving and creating the others. I was not aware the volcanic activity could move like that.
