"The hull of the Titan vessel "showed signs of cyclic fatigue," according to a January 2020 interview with OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, who is aboard the missing vessel. Rush told Geekwire that due to that stress, the hull rating was downgraded to a depth of 3,000 meters, 800 meters short of the Titanic's depth."

I remember watching coverage of this disaster for hours. It seems like a lifetime ago but I remember the horrible feeling everyone else and I had while watching it. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wik...k_submarine_disaster

So … no one is going to point out that these were a bunch of rich people who clearly have more money than brains. Before I get on any submersible or rocket ship or what have you, I’m going to do my homework. Apparently, there were real problems with this vessel, which answers to no governmental authority and is built to no discernible standards. I’ve considered skydiving, but I am too lazy to do the work to Suss out what makes a safe company. So I haven’t done it. Cindy — who opted not to use a Groupon for discount skydiving

Also…wouldn’t you have second thoughts about exploring the Titanic in a vehicle called Titan? A bit too creepy.

I said a lot of tourists are dumb earlier. It might not be politically correct but it's been true in my experience.

This detail certainly is getting a lot of attention online. And I get it, to some extent. This trip was optional for all on board, just sightseeing really. And you’re right, it certainly seems they didn’t do their homework. So there are lots of angles from which to criticize. But this vessel has apparently completed other dives to the Titanic, so maybe they thought that was all the confirmation needed. And ultimately, no one deserves to die like this. The passengers have my sympathy, and my only scorn is reserved for the pilot and his company.

In other news, Japanese twitter is abuzz with the discovery that one of the main Japanese TV stations has been planning to air the movie Titanic this weekend… Much of the speculation assumes that maybe they’ll change their programming?

Aereoplanes are heavier than air. Getting in one of those things is crazy enough. Jumping out of one with a flimsy umbrella you want to open is madness. That is as crazy as putting a heavy air tank on one's back and putting lead weights in the pockets before jumping into deep water. I can see fish in an aquarium thank you.

I wonder how many more victims the Titanic has claimed since it sank.

/thread drift We humans are an odd lot when it comes to what we focus on. In all probability, five people died in this event. My heart goes out to their friends and family. The attempts to rescue them have caught our attention for the last several days. Well, at least they have caught my attention. Meanwhile, 25,000 people will die of starvation today, as do each day. For the most part, those deaths will go unnoticed. https://www.un.org/en/chronicl...000-hunger-every-day

Oh dear, this is the result no one wanted. WTG, your second point is well made as well. And is certainly getting a lot of attention online as well.

1 Billion Dollars could feed those 25,000 people for 11 years based on $10 per person, per day. 1,000,000,000/250,000/365=10.9589041096
