Yeah, something is going on with reviews of restaurants.
We recently went to Portugal, and as usual we relied on restaurant reviews to find places to eat. In the past, this has worked reliably around the world.
Well, this time, the worst meals we had were restaurants found through Trip Advisor. The best meals were the ones we had once we gave up on Trip Advisor and just went with the tried and true method of finding places that had a lot of locals.
I do find reviews very useful on Amazon. I go right to the one-star reviews to see what people are complaining about. If they are mad that the shipment was late, I don't care. If they are pointing out a deficiency in a product, I take note.
I also have learned that some websites screen bad reviews and won't let you post one. Watch out for GE appliances -- they only allow positive reviews.
