One star Yelp reviews
The restaurant owner who asked for 1-star Yelp reviews

(There is an obnoxious overlay demanding an email address when you first open the site. It's hard to see, but there is an X in the top right corner that closes it.)

I pay Yelp no mind when I'm thinking about choosing a place in unfamiliar territory. I've known about their protection racket for some time.

Hilarious. I refuse to read yelp reviews. The whole thing is a pain to navigate.

Yeah, something is going on with reviews of restaurants.

We recently went to Portugal, and as usual we relied on restaurant reviews to find places to eat. In the past, this has worked reliably around the world.

Well, this time, the worst meals we had were restaurants found through Trip Advisor. The best meals were the ones we had once we gave up on Trip Advisor and just went with the tried and true method of finding places that had a lot of locals.

I do find reviews very useful on Amazon. I go right to the one-star reviews to see what people are complaining about. If they are mad that the shipment was late, I don't care. If they are pointing out a deficiency in a product, I take note.

I also have learned that some websites screen bad reviews and won't let you post one. Watch out for GE appliances -- they only allow positive reviews.

Yelp hides bad reviews, calling them unreliable. IF the company pays for Yelp advertising.
