Russia’s entire active duty military is 900,000.

So we’re talking 4% of their active duty troops.

So far.

Yes, but most of their active duty troops aren't really fit for duty ... bored and ill-trained conscripts stationed in Vitebsk for nine months to keep them out of trouble.

Russia's losses are well over 10% of the active professional forces thrown into Ukraine. They have literally been decimated. Their "elite" troops are the ones that spearheaded the assault, and I suspect they have also sustained a high casualty rate. They are not easily replaced. Hiring some thugs from Syria or Chechnya won't do the trick. Meanwhile, hundreds (or thousands) of volunteers are coming into Ukraine to fight FOR them. Some of these volunteers are already well-trained soldiers from the UK and US. Others are from Belarus. These guys could easily go back and make great trouble for the asshat who misgoverns that place.

Ukraine said a Russian landing ship was hit and shared photos and videos of the explosion and fire.

The navy wrote on Facebook on Thursday morning: "A large paratroop ship 'Orsk' of the Black Sea fleet of occupiers was destroyed in the occupied Russian port Berdyansk."

It shared a photo of an explosion on a vessel and a video of a ship on fire in a port.

Just saw that. Likely packed with ammunition.

I do hope it also had a substantial number of Russian soldiers/sailor aboard. Yes, every Russian who dies in Ukraine is one fewer who can kill Ukrainians and deliver artillery shells to the guns that rain death down on hospitals and apartment blocks. I don't apologize for wanting lots and lots of dead Russians.

Feeble attempt to save face. It's all going according to plan.

quote:
A top Russian general gave some of the most detailed public remarks to date on Russia's military strategy in Ukraine, claiming on Friday that the "first stage" of Russia's military plan is now complete, with their primary focus now centered on eastern Ukraine.

"In general, the main tasks of the first stage of the operation have been completed," Colonel General Sergei Rudskoy, first deputy chief of Russia's General Staff, said in a Friday briefing. "The combat potential of the armed forces of Ukraine has been significantly reduced, allowing us, I emphasize again, to focus the main efforts on achieving the main goal - the liberation of Donbas."

Rudskoy's remarks come as Russia's advances appear to have stalled around major Ukrainian cities such as Kyiv and Kharkiv. Russia has also failed to achieve air superiority in Ukraine and has suffered heavy losses of personnel since the start of the invasion.

"The public and individual experts are wondering what we are doing in the area of the blockaded Ukrainian cities," Rudskoy said. "These actions are carried out with the aim of causing such damage to military infrastructure, equipment, personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the results of which allow us not only to tie down their forces and prevent them from strengthening their grouping in the Donbas, but also will not allow them to do this until the Russian army completely liberates the territories of the DPR and LNR."

According to some Pentagon sources, Ukrainian forces are counterattacking around Kherson, the only mid-size city to have fallen.

Kherson is now "contested"

This is the mighty Russian military! We always knew that venality and corruption were likely a problem, a cancer eating away at readiness. But I don't think very many people thought things were this bad.

If the Ukrainians can stabilize things in the south and blunt new Russia probes, I would like nothing more than to see them begin selective counteroffensives rather than their current hit and run jabs. The Russians may play static defense, which could allow the Ukrainians to pick a spot, mass sufficient force, and destroy a Russian pocket in detail. That would send a very powerful message back to Moscow. Yes, Putin might blubber on about a nuclear response, but put me in the corner with those who think he is posturing with those threats .. trying to achieve via jawboning what he cannot seem to grab by force.
