Perfectly sensible given the collapse of any pretense of a globalizing and "trustworthy" Russia, and given their history of dependence and conquest.

Synchronous condensers are also being deployed in US grids for a different reason. The principal renewable energy sources, solar and wind, do not have the inherent inertia of large rotating generators. Synchronous condensers are one way of providing this stiffness to the grid for all the reasons stated in that article, even if the disrupting events on the grid are more likely to be caused by weather or equipment failure, not a belligerent neighboring country.

We did some work for a factory that had a small one of these. I have no idea what they did with it but I thought it was cool at the time.
