big alSynchronous condensers are also being deployed in US grids for a different reason. The principal renewable energy sources, solar and wind, do not have the inherent inertia of large rotating generators. Synchronous condensers are one way of providing this stiffness to the grid for all the reasons stated in that article, even if the disrupting events on the grid are more likely to be caused by weather or equipment failure, not a belligerent neighboring country.
