ETA this discussion has shifted to consider whether we should move to a new site/platform, since so much of the current site’s functionality is broken. My OP: By now I’m sure everyone has noticed that this forum is kind of wonky. When I am posting from my laptop, I don’t have buttons for editing or quoting, and almost all of the emoticons are broken (with the exception of maybe three or four). And no, those neutrons are truly gone (not just invisible from coloring etc.) But when I’m on my iPhone or iPad, all the buttons are there and all the motions work. Has anyone else noticed patterns like that? Any ideas about why?

on some devices you only have full functionality on certain web browsers. if you are using chrome, try firefox. if you are using a laptop, try a tablet.

Right, but I never had that problem in the past. I use Firefox on my laptop and Safari on my iPad and iPhone, and I’ve been doing that for years. I always had access to all the functions regardless of browser. At some point, that changed, and the forum is only fully functional if I’m on my iPad or iPhone. This is a recent development, like in the last few months I think. I certainly can switch devices, but it’s a hassle, and not good web design to say the least.

Steve this is surprising because it’s when I use Firefox that I have problems. And the nature of the problems don’t make sense — i.e. if it was a problem with responding to a post, then you could guess it’s a problem with a pop up blocker. But it’s a problem with missing buttons (missing functionality). Anyway, it’s not a huge deal, it’s just wonky and it’s a recent problem so I wonder what changed.

The problem has been around for several years, actually. I noticed weird things happening a year or more ago, but it seemed the problem would resolve itself. Now it's there all the time. The links to the functions are there but the icons are invisible. https://well-temperedforum.gro...603906897#4603906897 Firefox and Brave work for me on my iPad but not my Windows 10 laptop.

WTF has been on the same platform for almost 20 years, quite a record for any tech platform. TNCR has changed at least three times. If the quirks are that bad you might consider looking around, but I would not at this point. If you do decide to migrate, it’s not as traumatic as one might imagine.

We still have that backup site at the ready that runs on a much more modern platform should we decide to move....I just looked and I see we have hundreds of new members just waiting to post.

I have Apple Stuff, and no problems with WTF on Safari. Facebook runs well on the phone but terribly on the desktop. I think Facebook thinks of itself as a phone app these days and doesn’t bother to clean up its desktop functionality.

I'm on Chrome and don't see the icons. I do get hover text. Checking the loading of the page, I see that that the icon being requested for those missing ones is "blank.gif" so some logic somewhere is choosing to send the blank.gif. When this page loads it creates two errors related to the icons. The errors are basically the same, differernt icon: https://www.well-temperedforum...ustom/quote_ubb6.gif net::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID This is an error from the secure sockets layer. Then I notice that in the .css file, the images are defined with "http:" instead of "https:". That more than likely is causing the error because it's supposed to be a secure site, but http is an insecure request. Don't know if any of that helps admin or not.

Bernard, thanks so much for the helpful info. I'll ping Ax and see if he can take a look.

It's because of upgrades and changes to the browsers. They have different levels of functionality on different devices. And that changes over time as the browsers evolve. You will notice this on many web sites. You have different functionality on your phone than you do on your laptop.
