You wouldn't catch me dead there. I don't think most people have a realistic idea of how prevalent and pervasive the mafias are in these regions.

Many of my friends have visited Sicily and come away loving the place.

I seriously doubt Italian organized crime is against bringing money onto the island.

I dreamed last night I was in Italy visiting friends, one of whom grew up in Naples. It was quite a detailed dream and ended with me considering buying a house. Sometimes you don't know what triggers your dreams, but I think I can pin this one on this thread.

Heck, I didn't have to go to Sicily. I grew up with mafiosi. Town was run by them. Look up Melrose Park and the name Serpico. Big Grin

Haven't been able to get away from them even though I haven't lived in MP since high school. I ended up working for a Serpico at the Merc. Bought a car from a Serpico. And our vet is also a Serpico.

And yes, they're all related.

I'm not convinced living there would be a 'normal' assimilation into a society and culture in terms of what outsiders would consider expectable.

Everyone loves tourists who bring money. Ask me how I know.
