What a load of BS! I didn't know that.

How awful.

My tinnitus is mild-ish most of the time, but at times it ramps up in intensity. (Like before a migraine, when I'm tired, things like that)

If I have the ramped-up version constantly, I don't know how I'd manage. Frowner

Since you posted this, I started having trouble with tinnitus.

My doctor said that I had very mild hearing loss in the very highest frequencies, not enough to even notice in my day-to-day live, but enough that my brain was trying to "fill in" the missing frequencies. The result? Tinnitus.

I don't know if this is the medically accepted explanation or if it's just his, but it neatly swept aside what I was trying to tell him, which was that it had started shortly after I had a very mild case of Covid. I went to the doctor after a night when it actually woke me from sleep, which seems somehow significant?

Anyway, it's almost certainly always with me, but I'm pretty good at ignoring things like pain until they reach a threshold I can't possibly ignore. This means that I experience things that are actually continua as more of an on-off switch.

Right now, my ears are singing pretty dang loud, but I didn't have any trouble playing the piano yesterday.

MA, I’m sorry you’re having this. Tinnitus sucks.

Also, I have read that Covid can cause tinnitus. This shouldn’t be surprising though, because lots of things related to the sinuses can either cause or aggravate tinnitus.

I notice tinnitus much more when I am a few hours or a day ahead of getting a migraine, when I’m tired, when I have a cold…

Sometimes it just sounds like someone turned up the volume on my tinnitus all of a sudden, it is a very off sensation that sometimes makes me briefly dizzy.

And I had a big ramp up in tinnitus after I had a concussion and had post concussive syndrome. And a few months out it sort of mellowed a bit…

Hopefully you will have a mellowing. In the meantime, I don’t have any other advice that to ignore it to the best of your ability.

Exactly my situation. I don’t notice any hearing loss but it shows up in tests.

This is pretty much how I experience it, too. Always there, but I can ignore it…until I can’t. I used to think playing the piano made it worse, but now I think it’s just that it makes me notice it more.

I think mine started after a course of antibiotics about 20 years ago. Feh.

Wow. I'm sorry, MA.

I don't want to jinx myself but I feel it's by the grace of God I don't have this condition.

I'll leave aside the past and say I'm exposed to constant barages of high decibel sound, white noise, etc.

Urg. My right ear seemed to hurt mildly for the last few days. Today the pain got pretty bad. It hurt more as the day progressed. It's reached the level of something I can't ignore.

I'm going to urgent care in the morning.

I poked a q tip in this ear six or eight months ago. It bled for six days. I went to my PCP. It did what he said it would - develop a clot. The clot fell out in a few weeks and it went back to not hurting.

Now I'm thinking it's the same damage and/or it's infected.

I have a CT scan with imaging day after tomorrow meaning I go to the imaging place, drink radioactive fluid, and will come home and be sick.

Oh, well. My lower back and right hip are in constant pain. I couldn't stand it today so I walked to the pool and spent time exercising. I need to do it more often.

Strange thing, the pain lowered a lot while I was sleeping. I'm still going to the urgent care. It might just have mild permanent damage and hurt occasionally. I wouldn't be surprised.

Wow. I just had a Lyft driver from hell.

The feedback I gave him was 1 star and comments said--

Incompetent, aggressive, and very, very rude.

He was all of those things and he tried to pressure me to get out of the car when he couldn't find the drop off location. I was trying to help him but he kept interfering with me.

He did arrive at the address randomly and yelled at me to get out of his car. I told him not to pick me up again, andthat he needed help. He yelled **** you when I was getting out his car. So I said the same to him in sign language. Roll Eyes

Good place to mention the benefit of ear plugs. Gget the hi fidelity kind that leave an open tube to your ear so sound quality is not affected while volume is reduced.

Tinnitus is often accompanied by hyperaccusis, a sensitivity to certain sounds, particularly overlapping sounds as in a crowd or restaurant. I have that too.

The slight hearing loss I have most likely is the fault of rock and roll; in particular a 1968 concert by Jimi Hendrix at Clark University. Sitting in the third row seemed like a good idea at the time.

I lost my Etymotic decibel reducing earplugs in Nashville during AmericanaFest in September. I didn’t particularly like them, but I managed to keep them for a decade or so! I ordered Loop Experience earplugs to replace them. They’re a lot more comfortable, and they seem to do what I want them to do. Way better than the cheap foam ones I had to use for a day while waiting for delivery!

Yes, finding something that is comfortable is often the top challenge. I tend to have to use the smaller sized tips for my ears. Did the Loops come with multiple sizes for fitting?

For tuning, I go back and forth between "eargasm" brand and my Move1 earbuds that I can use in transparent mode or active noise cancellation mode. Even in transparent mode, the top octave or so is really muffled compared to open ear. The Loop ones look to have a pretty flat response curve which may help?
