It's a pipe. This house was re-piped in copper some time in the 80's. Whatever pipe they used is starting to fail - we had another leak in the bathroom wall just last month. I see a re-pipe project in my future.

Dodged a bullet. What's leaking is a water hammer arrestor I didn't even know was up there. The one next to it is in bad shape as well. Easy enough.

They keep pipes from rattling when a valve is turned off quickly. Not all houses have them. I'm about to find out if my house really needed them.

I have a friend who did a complete re-pipe in the early 1990s. Their contractor gave them the old "copper is proper" talk and they dropped much money to go with copper instead of ABS or PVC. All of the (affordable) copper pipe was coming from China at the time. Within a few years, all over the house, they started to get pinhole leaks. They ended up buying a large box of the rubber+band clamp repair gizmos. I didn't hear if they ever just bit the bullet and had the house re-piped again.

It's a good thing this happened when we were home. The part split at the bottom as soon as I touched it. If it had happened while we were away it would probably have filled the whole house with water.

In the late 80's and early '90's there was a lot of trouble with copper pipe made in Mexico. It had iron in the copper which then rusted and caused pinholes. I suspect that is what my house was repiped with and may well be what your friends house is piped in also.
