Even Crimea voted to join Ukraine. It was overwhelming in the Donbas, despite a 40% Russian minority.

The Maidan revolution of 2014 was an organic response of the Ukrainian people. Those who casually call it a US coup deny the Ukrainian people agency in ways that they probably wouldn't deny the Syrian people agency for their uprising (crushed by the Russians), or the Egyptian uprising that threw out Mubarak.
