IMO we need to get the old fogies out of there. Anyone who's been in politics long enough to reach their late 60's or older simply can't be trusted to tell the truth. Anyone in their late 70's can't be trusted to live through the campaign and 8 years in office. Anyone in the 60+ group can't be trusted to figure out a way to "see" the political environment as anything other than "us vs them". So, who's the youngest candidate? Whoever that is make them Pres. Buttigieg is 37. Gabbard is 38, Salwell is 38. Go with one of them. OR Go with any political minority* that passes the age test. Castro, Gillibrand, Harris, Klobuchar, Messam, Yang. There could be other political minority candidates that I don't know about, if there are add them to this list. Who's the oldest or smartest or most respected or least offensive or ...name your criteria...? Make them VP. * Political minority - any under-represented demographic in politics. This includes women, LGBTQ, US racial minorities and any other under represent group. JMHO. Caveat: Since I haven't looked closely at any of these candidates let's add another disqualification criteria. Anyone who belongs to or supports any hate group is eliminated. That includes any religious candidate who believes their religion should be able to dictate the lifestyles of other people, anyone who thinks LGBTQ individuals can be "cured" or that they're living a lie or violating gods will or any crap like that, anyone who thinks the Civil War South fought for states rights, and a whole long list of other stupidity that I'm not going to take the time to think through and write down.

We saw him recently in the audience at our biennial "Saturday Night Live" satire. Montana's legislature meet for 3 months every two years, and in the years it meets, the community here in the state capital puts on this live performance of skits skewering state politics. Bullock got royally skewered this year for seeking the presidency. Every Democrat in Montana is desperate for him to run against Steve Daines for the U.S. Senate. He's said he won't, and that he's only interested in running for president, but things got awfully quiet after that skit. OTOH, the Montana legislature is about to wrap up business and go dormant until 2021, so maybe he'll announce then. I think he'd definitely take some wind out of Buttigieg's sails if he does announce.

Beatification Candidate |
I'm looking for someone to rally the public and government to take the boldest steps possible to turn this burning ship around. No middle of the road or incremental plans are even worth considering. Start with the radical and extreme and then compromise back to the merely bold and forward-reaching. That, and anyone but a tRumpublican...

Bernard, I wanted to respond to this earlier, but I'm not allowed to engage in political advocacy at work. Now I'm home, so here we go. I totally understand what you're saying about the tribe thing. See, when Obama was running, I was worried sick the whole time. He was amazing, so of course if he lost it would be because of racism. And not just any racism. It would be the kind of racism that people hide until they are in the voting booth, the kind that is so deep in them that they would rather elevate Sarah Palin than have a black man and his black family in the White House. It would feel like a very deliberate rejection for me as a black person. And now we have Mayor Pete, who is the gay Obama. He is way better than anyone else in the race, and the objection I hear most often is the fear that a gay guy cannot win. America isn't ready. And if it isn't -- if Pete doesn't get nominated because of those reservations -- it will be a rejection of all of the progress that LGBTQ Americans have made. It will still mean we as a nation care more about a person's immutable characteristics than whether they are right for the job. And that is scary. Me, I'm afraid of losing to Trump in 2020. But I am even more afraid of betraying my own values (and betraying people like Bernard) by letting my lack of confidence in Americans decide for me. So, unless someone else proves themselves better, I'm going with Pete (and Chasen).

I don't know if anyone else remembers me saying this, but, in 2008, I didn't think America was ready to elect a black President. I was wrong. It certainly helped that the black man in question was as spectacular a candidate as Barack Obama. So, when I see a gay man who is a spectacular candidate, I don't want to discount him. It's still very early, and I reserve the right to change my mind, but Pete Buttigieg is my candidate, so far.
