We picked up a dresser and two nightstands off of Craigslist. We don't need the dresser but the lot was $350 - less than a pair of flat pack night stands would cost and I've had quite enough of flat pack furniture for a while. The ad described the style as "Brutalist", a term I have heard used to describe architecture but not furniture. It's not great furniture and it never was - particle board, nameless, only marking is Canada 1974. The veneer is too thin to sand but the drawers are dovetailed so there is that. Nightstands were in decent shape but the dresser is hammered. Cleaned up the nightstands and I think they look pretty good:  Here is a link to a dresser like ours on First Dibs, listed at $2,600. I'll be amazed if it sells for anything close to that - its in about the same terrible shape as mine is with chunks of particle board missing in about the same spots. It's roomy if nothing else.  It's going to take some time to restore, which should give me something to do during the Great Blizzard of '22.

I like the 2 pieces shown, but I wouldn’t call them brutalist. Wood tones are too comforting for that.

Look up “brutalist architecture”. It’s some of the ugliest work you’ll ever see and for a long time it was the favored style for government buildings.

I kinda like Brutalist architecture. To me, it looks solid and sturdy. But that may be a generational thing. I like it even more since I-1 says he hates it. I was in Long Beach a couple years ago when the new city hall complex opened. My friend who was studying design at the time walked me over there -- past the old Brutalist building that was going to be torn down. He proclaimed it a big, ugly, soulless box. I thought it was nice. Anyway, I like the nightstands. Can you re-veneer the top of the dresser?

Wow, super interesting to see these buildings, and then think about Steve’s nightstand, the nightstands give such a different impression, I would have never connected them to these architectural styles.
