‘Bank jackings’ in Chicago see robbers drain victims’ accounts with their phone apps
They grab cellphones and demand pass codes to banking apps like Zelle and Venmo. A Chicago architect who lost more than $2,000 that way says: “Don’t have any banking apps on your phone.”

Happened fairly recently to a friend of my neighbor's college age son. They both go to Loyola here in Chicago. His buddy left a bar and some guys came up to him and demanded his phone and passcodes. That was the first time I heard of this type of robbery.

Ugh, something else to deal with.

Right, just as everyone has practically switched everything to their phones. Oof.

It was sort of inevitable. People aren’t carrying cash.

Keep a separate phone with low bank balance just for muggers?

I see it’s possible to hide apps on an iPhone.

Couldn’t hurt?

I’m not sure how much I’ll worry about this as I read that banks are liable for reimbursement like they are for credit cards.

If I do decide to set up protection I’ll get a throwaway bank account and put the app on my phone. A few $hundy, maybe. Anyone who wants it can have it.

I’d hide my real bank account so you have to search for it.

I have to wonder about this. At the very least I would worry that there might be a significant time lag during which you could be without funds if you had money in a checking and/or savings account and thieves forced you to transfer that such that the money was no longer in your account...

But I think if you search for the app with the search bar, it will pop up anyway

If the bank jacket has to transfer you $$$$ to an account he controls, how hard can that be to trace?
