So, my uncle emailed me to ask me to explain the LH part of this score to him, but I have no idea. ![]() The count doesn't add up, are you supposed to count those three 16th notes like super fast triplets? Score and video: ![]() They sound here like an uncountable triplet, or almost like a tripled grace note?? TIA!

Yes, the 16th note LH groups should have a triplet sign over them. They don’t sound super fast to me in the recording. I only listened to the opening few bars.

Interesting. I’ve never heard that transcribed for piano before.

Yes, triplets. Don’t try to count precisely, neither you nor your listener is a robot. Just wing it like a human and it’ll be fine.

Thanks everyone! Ok, I've listened to it more and the LH is definitely countable. "one-triplet, two-triplet, three-and" -- you can really hear it in the video I linked. And he includes a drum track at the end of the video if you wanted to play along, which is cool. For the record, I would never play this. It sounds like instant tendinitis to my ears! But the guy in the video does a great job, super consistent LH. My uncle plays (and teaches) jazz guitar btw. I have no idea what his interest in this piece. He does this every now and then, randomly sends me some piano sheet music with a question -- no preamble, no "how are you." It's like "drive by piano questions." ![]()

I talked to my uncle again and he said he was wondering if there was some secret knowledge in the score that pianists are hiding from guitarists. ![]()

Was once told to play triplets as "trip-ul-let".

Yes, I learned that as well. I also learned different words for counting two against three and three against four, but I no longer remember what those are. ![]()

Just relax your left hand. If you want to get tendinitis, try the Schumann Toccata. ![]()
