Several years ago I had the privilege of attending training with Kevin Cameron, who is an expert in threat assessment and trauma response - specifically as it relates to school shootings and similar events. One of the things he said was that video games don’t cause violent behaviour. What they do is provide a rehearsal space for people who are intending to commit these acts. In other words, they aren’t going to determine whether someone will shoot a bunch of people, but if they are already planning on doing it then they are likely to play violent video games in the lead up to the act.
