...After 32 years at the NFFMCo. Through ups and downs. Mergers and layoffs (though I never actually got laid off). Months of 60 or 70-hour weeks. Too many sleepless nights. Great trips to wonderful, interesting places and working with wonderful, interesting people.

I spent all 32 years in one part of customer support or another: technical training, technical publications, on-site support, and stuff like that. Basically, helping our customers use our products safely, efficiently, and profitably.

Actually, I am waiting for confirmation that yesterday was my last day on the payroll. I turned in my badge, laptop, company phone, and company credit card on Tuesday. I stopped working full time in early June. I've been burning off my vacation since then. My replacement started at the end of April and I spent several weeks getting her up to speed.

Usually people leave and then they start looking for a replacement. But, I was in a pretty sensitive job and I wanted to make sure that I was leaving the group well-situated.

I also had surgery on both hands on Wednesday, so typing is a challenge and will be for a few more days until I get the bandages off. That also precludes juggling, riding my motorcycle, and cleaning the cat box. I haven't tried strumming on my banjo, yet. But I will write a bit more when my hands are up to it.

Many congratulations, PJ!! You've certainly earned it (70 hour/week for months?? HairRaising)

I must have missed something, but what's with your hands? Carpal tunnel? Wishing you well in your recovery. I know how frustrating hand surgery is when getting back to normal (only better).

Oh my!! As Amanda said, carpel tunnel, or something else?

I hope you're using some kind of voice input for typing!

Trigger finger. I have now had all ten fingers "fixed". This time it was both pinkies. The surgeon said he normally doesn't do both hands on one visit, but I just wanted to get it over with.

Yeah, there were months at a stretch of 60 or 70 hour weeks. One time was most of a year when we were rewriting the entire manual in one go. I raked in a lot of overtime, but it nearly wiped me out physically and mentally.

Congratulations! Retirement is wonderful, I hope to return to it soon.

If I were in your position, I would tell my significant other that my hands were unlikely to ever be able to deal with changing the cat box again…
