The kids got us a new air fryer as an early Christmas present. The first thing I made in it was toast, and it does a very good job of that. Then I made chicken jerky for Sam. Checked the calibration on the thermostat while I was at it. I found that the temperature swings some 60 degrees when set as low as it will go (160 degrees). OK for jerky but I don't see doing custards in it. Jerky is easy, and a fraction of the cost of the store bought kind. Cut up chicken, put in air fryer for 2 hours. That's it.

What kind of martini do you serve with chicken jerky?

It's actually a Gibson, but Sam isn't fussy.

Out toaster oven does air frying. Wirecutter actually recommends a toaster over with air frying over dedicated air fryers.

Steve and Quirt: Models? Reviews? I think I’d like an air fryer, but I can’t have another appliance without offloading one. If an air fryer can make toast, the toaster oven is a possible candidate for ejection. There’s an air fryer lid for Instant Pot, but only for the 6 qt, and I have an 8 qt IP. Also, they get fair to middling reviews.

I have the air fryer lid for the instant pot. It doesn't work nearly as well as this one does. It also replaced the toaster oven, saving valuable counter space, and it makes much better toast than the toaster oven ever did. The model I have is a Cuisinart TOA 60 Tried fresh shrimp and frozen french fries in it at lunch and both came out very well!

We have the Breville. It’s a little pricey, but I’ve had very good luck with Breville appliances. And it’s large, which makes it really an oven-support unit. Steve, I had a Cuisinart toaster oven before this, which also made the best toast ever. Until one of the coils started going, and then the toast was very good but a little uneven.

That chicken jerky looks awesome. What spices etc does one add? How might beef jerky compare with retailers' versions? Feeling tempted but put off by thought of lost counter space. What footprint does one have (are they all the same size)? That puts me off the Instapot as great as they sound. I spent a fortune on the top of the line Zojirushi bread-maker. finding I hardly used it. Likewise the Vitamix. (Don't even ask about food processors, citrus juicers, vegetable "pasta makers", salad spinners, fancy drink frothers, juicers, outdoor propane barbeque grills and oh so many more.) And still I drool over new items like this! But the fact is, I eat simple and it's mostly just me.) A son loves his Air Fryer. (Same son who complains I don't even have a toaster when he visits!)

Thanks, Quirt and Steve! Steve, that unit looks great, but it’s probably too tall for the space I have for it. Guessing it might get pretty warm? It would be under cabinets against a wall on one side.

They come in different sizes and shapes. This one is fairly large in comparison to most. I didn't add any spices to the jerky for the dog, but there are lots of recipes on line for marinades and such to make jerky for people. I'll use one of those when I make the beef jerky for myself. I will say that even unseasoned the chicken jerky is pretty good.

Thank you, Steve! My mouth is watering already. How lovely to think I'd finally have a toaster too for when that son visits. Oh, wait - I have to make room for it, whichever one I get (hope they come small too!)

I'm not a fan of "gadget" kitchen appliances, but I must admit that the air fryer has intrigued me. The notion of making fries without oil alone sounds good. (Or at least without needing to deep fry...?) I'm glad to hear the shrimp and frozen fries came out well. Does it brown things?
