quote:
Of all the wonders of the modern American Chinese menu, crab rangoon is one of the strangest. It consists of cream cheese, sometimes sweetened, plus, usually, very small bits of imitation crab, stuffed into a wonton wrapper and deep-fried, served with a syrupy, neon sweet-and-sour dipping sauce. It is, essentially, deep-fried cheesecake with fake crab in it—as sweet as any dessert, but served as an appetizer. It has a Burmese name, is served in a theoretically Chinese restaurant, and its main component was invented in New York in the late 19th century.

Sounds yummy!

I am not a purist (except when I am).

A lot of fusion dishes are awesome.
Yummy

We like it. Have been ordering it for years. I just wish the crab wasn't imitation.

Thai restaurants around here have a slightly more Thai version. It’s a fave with Mrs pj and DD.

I lived and worked in China a bit. Of course there are many regional cuisines. But I never ate anything that looked like chow mein, chop suey, or other staples of American “Chinese” food.

On the other hand, I don’t think “preserved duck foot” would get a lot takers across the U.S.

There was a funny video on buzzfeed a while back of real Chinese trying and reacting to food from Panda Express. A couple guys really liked it. Most were not so favorable.

I'm not much of a dessert eater (avoid lots of sugar), and I eat fried food very sparingly. So, you can imagine what I think of this dish ... Razzer

If I'm gonna sin, it'll be with a mess of Calabash-style fried shrimp or scallops at the Net House in Beaufort NC, with the shrimp and scallops brought onshore fresh!

They are one of those evil pleasures that you shouldn't eat but do. And enjoy hugely. Well, some of us.

Another one is shrimp toast.

Crab rangoon sounds so wrong to me. My grandfather used to say cheese was for rats. No dairy!

But shrimp toast? I remember making that with my favorite auntie (the one who taught me to knit) for a party. Sooooo yummy.

Taking the concept one step further: Crab rangoon dip at Aldi.

edit: The article says it was a limited time offer at Aldi's. Here's a recipe to make it at home: https://www.delish.com/cooking...-rangoon-dip-recipe/
