There is a just-released movie based on the book by Judy Bloom of the same title, "Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret." The book was published in 1970 and was supposedly popular with middle schoolers for a time. I have not read the book. I am just curious if folks here have read the book and won't mind sharing your thoughts on it.

I read it but at this point I don't really remember much about it.... I think the reason I don't remember it much is because it wasn't earth-shattering for me. Growing up, I had a great relationship with my mother and we talked openly about all kinds of things, including religion, sex, menstruating (which are the big ones in the book). I think she's actually the one who gave me the book. I'll ask her if she remembers that. In any case, the reason I say that is because I have the impression that the book is more important (and continues to be important) for girls who are less comfortable talking with their parents, or girls whose parents are less comfortable talking with them, about these kinds of issues.

What was your reaction at the time?

I felt like a peeing Tom or as if I was listening in on conversations between girls that I wasn’t supposed to hear.

I confess, it’s a very particular fetish, peeing while reading about teenaged girls doing breast enlargement exercises. Fortunately I outgrew it.
