Much heroism. The baby's older sister was rescued moments later by a bystander who dashed through flames and smoke.
Meanwhile the children's mother who saved the baby by throwing him off the balcony to the arms of the former linebacker, perished when she went back in in an attempt to save her other child.
All those involved in the rescues report themselves bonded for life, including the children's father who was at work during the fire.
