We had an area rug in our dining room at the rental which worked quite well but does not work in the new house. I was going to put it in the piano room, but I don't think I like it. It would look fantastic with a black grand on top of it, but I'm not there yet! Anyway, here's a photo of the space without the rug, and then a few with the rug. I don't think it matches my beloved rocking chair. I'm thinking no rug. Any thoughts? (Also, I think the wall is going to have to stay empty like that until I get a grand, because at that point the decor will all get moved around)

I agree with you. If the white in the rug was off-white to match your walls it might work better.

I think a rug would look nice in there, but maybe not one as bold as the one in the photo.

I like the rug in that room. I don't care for the bare floor.

Maybe the scale of the pattern is too large for the room.

I love the rug, but it doesn’t seem to fit the room, style-wise. But the more important question: How does your piano sound in there? I put a round rug under my grand, because the room is all hard surfaces and leather furniture, and it was too lively/bright for my ears!

I don't know about the rug (I have no visual sense) but I think you really need to hang some things on the walls, or get some plants in there. That might even help the rug.

It doesn't match your rocking chair. You're right about that. I'm voting no.

now that i'm seeing this on a large screen instead of my phone, i agree with daniel. but the room does need a rug. just not this one.

Yeah, I think that's a big part of the problem. In our rental house, a dining room table with cherry top and black legs sat on top of this, and it worked really well together. In our new house, this rug won't work in the dining room, so that's not an option (and I don't think we need a rug in there anyway). And as Adagio said
That's where it's bugging me, and although the green in the rocking chair matches the carpet, the style doesn't. I'm wondering if the rug would work with a black grand on top of it, and then make the rocking chair ok as well. If not, I might see if I can sell the rug because there's no where else in this house to use it. I wonder if it would get mildewy if we rolled it up and stuck it in the basement for a year.
Yes, we do. We just moved in 4 days ago though! Also, I'm hesitant to put stuff on the walls because the room's layout will change once I get a grand in here... But then again, that is probably a year away at this point (spent a good portion of my piano money on the new HVAC!) I wonder if I could lay down papers or towels or something to give me an idea of how I would position a grand, and that would let me know how the art should go on the wall, then I wouldn't have to wait a year with bare walls. At the very least I'd like to put my piano artwork up above the piano (the piece I had above this piano in the rental)...

The rug brightens the room and may be good for the piano tone. I like it. Try it for a while. Ask Josh.

I do agree that there is a definite style clash between the rocker and the rug - the rug is very modern and straight-lined while the rocker is antique and curvy. The piano and shelf also have modern lines though - so maybe the rocker is what's out of place in the room. At any rate, I am a firm believer "if you love it, you can make it work" and in "if you have it, use it til you find something better" so I would probably leave the rug out and just be a little clashy for a while, and deal with upgrading things down the road. The danger in this approach is that you get used to it and after a while, you forget that you wanted to upgrade. But since you are definitely planning on getting a grand, I think that will force you to re-evaluate the room down the road. I also think that when you add some art and plants and other stuff in the room (so the rocker isn't just sitting over there all by itself), everything will blend better and the different styles won't be so evident. When I was piano shopping, I made a template out of newspapers to lay on the floor to see how the piano would fit - you can totally do that. Some piano stores also have pre-made templates they will loan you so you can see what size piano fits best in your room.

Yes! That's what I'll do, just need to figure out one or two sizes I suppose. (The closest piano shops are at least an hour's drive, so I'll save that trip for when I'm ready to actually start shopping. No reason to go and play some pianos I can't buy at this point!)

No fear! You're a homeowner now and you can put as many holes in the wall as you like. And Mr. SK can fix them.
What did you get? What did they do with the ductwork in the basement?

Steve, I started a new thread: HVAC Update They didn't do much to the ductwork, just did some spot-TLC. We talked about it and they agreed that, with the old system, if the house was cool when AC was on and warm when the heat was on, then the ductwork was functioning (at the very least). And when they tested the system once it was installed, there was cool air flowing out of each vent as expected. So although it may not look very nice, it's going to stay that way for now
