Hmm, that's almost exactly how I was imagining a grand would go there. Pianist sits with back to the left corner, lid opens up into the room, which mimics the position of a piano on a stage. This would, I think, also make the best use of overall space and leave more of the room.

But I do like the idea of having the tail come out more into the room, the pianist would have her back more to the left corner. That would look nice, and maybe the space use would work out if I could figure out what to do with that corner where there are two doors and an HVAC return...

But, in the meantime, no grand, just an upright, so...

Thanks for the suggestion Bernard, I think it's better without that shelf in the left corner, regardless of where I put the rest of the pieces!
