You can say that again.

John Cage's "As Slow As Possible," was performed in Cage's lifetime in less than a half hour at it's premier. Several years after his death some insane navel gazers decided it should be played over a span of 639 years! What an absurdity.

A few days ago, the 16th note of the piece--which was began 20 or so years ago--was played.

I am no fan of John Cage, sorry. But I am even less a fan of these egoists who think that playing one note of a piece every 2 years constitutes music. Who do they think they are kidding? The piece is entitled "As Slow As Possible". A piece of music that lasts 639 years is imPossible. You might as well call squirting paint out one's anus "art" (yes it's happened to great fanfare). Oh brother.

Who is supposed to appreciate it? We, who are alive now or those in 600 years time (if it survives)? Or those in between? Honestly. To say that it loses it's entire sense of structure is an understatement in the extreme.

This isn't music. It's a head game, sure. It's a mental exercise (in what?).

I'm not losing any sleep over it, that's for sure. But Please. Don't. Call. It. Music.

Thank you.

I agree, it’s not music… I’m not even sure it’s art… more like just gimmick.

One of the people in the article said “It was incredible, a real goosebump moment,” I’m thinking, you’re probably just coming down with a cold… Wink

Doubt that this is what Cage had in mind! For one thing, playing anything "as slow as possible" requires mental effort on the part of the performer. This version does not.
