The FDA says it will take about two weeks to restart production at Abbott's Sturgis plant and another six to eight weeks to bring that plant to full capacity. Imported formula will also need to be screened and is probably weeks away from showing up on store shelves, although use of the military's air freight contracts might speed delivery somewhat.
I can only imagine how terrifying the shortage, and esp. this timeline must be for parents who rely on formula for their babies. |

| How do you think hoarding could be prevented or significantly mitigated? (this is a sincere question) Given that people panicked when they thought they couldn't get a hold of toilet paper, when the thing at risk is literally someone's baby's life, what else can they do? We never ran out of toilet paper, but when it was very scarce, we tried to be very conscious about not buying more than we needed, and we messaged with local friends on FB sharing info about where TP could be purchased and offering to share etc. But again, no one's life was on the line... (As it happens, I have three friends/acquaintances who have babies under 1 y/o. I don't know if they're breast feeding or not, and I am not about to ask them about the shortage. But I find myself checking their FB pages to see if they "seem ok"... |

| SK - formal rationing or with the price system. There’s not really time to set up the first in any truly effective way and there is no political tolerance for using prices to prevent shortages. (I wonder how long until eBay stops sales). So I think we’ll have shortages that persist.
