it would be a good thing if the faculty who have expertise on the middle east would hold a teach-in for those students who care about this issue. i also strongly wish they would hold a teach-in on anti-semitism. i'm part of an initiative on anti-semitism here in montana and one of the ideas i raised is to do anti-semitism teach-ins on our state university campuses.

this is a huge opportunity to educate young minds on both topics, and one it seems the admins of these institutions are wasting.

I think this is a great idea... I just worry about how receptive people are to it. Frowner

Law enforcement seems to be in a lose-lose position. Do too much, and you're militarizing the action. Do too little, and disaster ensues. I guess I keep remembering January 6th and the lack of preparedness of the Capitol Police. How would that have turned out if they were ready for the protestors that showed up? Would we have called it militaristic? Or well executed if the Capitol rioters had been contained?

I caught up a little on what happened at some universities. In one instance, a rule regarding encampments was changed one day and enforced the next day by state police. I see that as a proactive, if somewhat sneaky, move on the part of the administration to contain the protests before things escalated. They're seeing what is happening elsewhere. And I have no clue as to what they and law enforcement know about the make-up of the protestors that might have led them to try to break things up pre-emptively.

It's so simple, even a university can pull it off ... Wink

One reason we have avoided campus confrontation, maybe?

Nina, I won’t quote you if you might delete your post. But the situation there ticks me off. Protest is good. Peaceful protest is good. But vandalism is stupid. What does that accomplish? How does that help anyone?

Yes, this is an issue. It’s not helpful to set them up for failure, but at the same time, they are the pros, and IMO it is appropriate to hold them to a higher standard.

Regular police forces, and especially campus police, should be trained to de-escalate and should prioritize that in most situations. Far too often, that doesn’t seem to happen.

Nina: what's the $$ amount of the damage, and have students in the building been identified so that their accounts can be charged for their share of the damage? Accountability ...

BTW, if it fits the definition of a massacre, it isn't a 'shooting.'

I was on the side of the students at Kent State by the time I was 6. I'm certainly not changing my mind at 56.

It only makes sense that militarized police were involved in many of the recent protests.

Authority good, authoritarianism not so much.

I went to a New Orleans Mardi Gras the year the cops were on strike. It was very peaceful.
That prompted studies that found that the actions of the police were causing the riots.
Calling for the police is easy.

Support for the students at Kent State doesn’t require support for all students, everywhere. For example, I didn’t support protests by students opposing racial integration of their high schools.

It’s a question of what the students are supporting. If they support eradication of Israel, or don’t believe in Israel’s right to exist, no, I’m not good with that.
