He is the US scientist who became the figurehead of attempts to combat the country’s coronavirus epidemic, described in some quarters as “America’s doctor”.

Now Anthony Fauci appears sidelined by Donald Trump’s White House after repeatedly contradicting the president’s view about the effectiveness of the government response.

In recent days the 79-year-old director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has come under increasing fire from the president and his proxies. Trump told Fox news interviewers that Fauci had “made a lot of mistakes” and said he “disagreed” with Fauci’s claim that the US was in a bad place in its coronavirus response.

Also from the Guardian:

quote:
The Association of American Medical Colleges issued a statement in support of Dr Anthony Fauci, as the White House raises questions about the infectious disease expert’s credibility.

AAMC CEO David J. Skorton and AAMC chief scientific officer Ross McKinney said in the statement, “The AAMC is extremely concerned and alarmed by efforts to discredit Anthony Fauci, MD, our nation’s top infectious disease expert. Dr. Fauci has been an independent and outspoken voice for truth as the nation has struggled to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

“As we are seeing from the surge in COVID-19 cases in areas that have reopened, science and facts—not wishful thinking or politics—must guide America’s response to this pandemic.”

The statement concludes, “Taking quotes from Dr. Fauci out of context to discredit his scientific knowledge and judgment will do tremendous harm to our nation’s efforts to get the virus under control, restore our economy, and return us to a more normal way of life.

“America should be applauding Dr. Fauci for his service and following his advice, not undermining his credibility at this critical time.”

When is Fauci going to get tired of being berated by I-1 and just leave?

He could easily go on the talk-shows every day and have more impact than he's doing now.

The Republican party is spreading "opposition research" about the leading scientist on its own Coronavirus task force. This is the utter depravity of the party, and, ... of the people who willingly vote for it. Truly deplorable.

How's that, Horace ...

Greg Sargent agrees ...

So does conservative Michael Gerson

As far as I know, this official record is unique: A White House attack on the government’s leading infectious-disease specialist during a raging pandemic. It indicates an administration so far gone in rage, bitterness and paranoia that it can no longer be trusted to preserve American lives.

Just more judgmental blather ...

Former game show host Chuck Woolery.

quote:
White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany was asked Monday to explain why President Donald Trump retweeted former game show host Chuck Woolery’s claim that “everyone is lying” about the coronavirus, including the Centers for Disease Control, as a way to keep the economy coming back before the election.

A reporter asked McEnany, “The president retweeted something this morning … saying that the CDC is lying about the coronavirus in order to hurt his chances of getting re-elected. Does the president believe that the CDC is lying about COVID-19?”

McEnany tried to explain what the intent of Trump’s retweet was — blaming his displeasure on CDC leaks and “some rogue individuals.”

Woolery’s tweet, though, was a sweeping statement that doesn’t mention anything about leaks. It suggested that the CDC, media, Democrats and “our doctors” are lying about the coronavirus.

In his tweet, Woolery wrote: “The most outrageous lies are the ones about Covid 19. Everyone is lying. The CDC, Media, Democrats, our Doctors, not all but most, that we are told to trust. I think it’s all about the election and keeping the economy from coming back, which is about the election. I’m sick of it.”

Can he do more to help the public by resigning from Trump's increasingly counterproductive COVID panel, and going on national television, and testifying before Congress, as the head of the National Institute of Allergic and Infectious Diseases.

I respect and admire Dr. Fauci for his brilliant career and the work he has been doing for the past several months.

I am talking about the personal toll it takes to be publicly berated, have your credentials and expertise questioned, and simply be prevented from doing the thing you were asked to do by the person who asked you to do it.

Agree, pj. But I hope he is reading the press and understands that the majority of people, including all of his peers and colleagues, support him fully. His reputation remains intact for all but the loony fringe.

Who's on first?

quote:
It’s coronavirus chaos at the White House.

The Trump administration erupted in open not-so-civil war Wednesday as a top aide to President Trump was accused by White House officials of “going rogue” with an unauthorized opinion piece slamming Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Peter Navarro, a top presidential economic adviser and close Trump ally, came under withering friendly fire for his shocking USA Today piece late Tuesday in which he slammed the nation’s foremost pandemic expert as an error-prone quack.

“Navarro went rogue,” a senior White House official told ABC News. “The White House does not stand by these unauthorized opinions and Mr. Navarro owes Dr. Fauci an apology.”

A senior White House official tells me: “Navarro went rogue, and put out his personal opinion without any approvals. The White House does not stand by these unauthorized opinions and Mr. Navarro owes Dr. Fauci an apology.” https://t.co/mMhFULIiHG

— Katherine Faulders (@KFaulders) July 15, 2020

White House spokeswoman Alyssa Farah joined the circular firing squad when she claimed that the opinion piece does not reflect Trump’s opinions and “is the opinion of Peter alone.”

“Trump values the expertise of the medical professionals advising his Administration,” Farah wrote on Twitter.

Peter Navarro, the best and brightest of the economies profession. A shining exemplar of how the GOP makes room at the top for people with ideas and real expertise ...

More judgmental stuff from "an angry liberal."

And one who probably has more street cred in the profession than most of Trump's "leading advisors" ...
