Life on the inside as a locked-in patient

Jake Haendel spent months trapped in his body, silent and unmoving but fully conscious. Most people never emerge from ‘locked-in syndrome’, but as a doctor told him, everything about his case is bizarre

Wow. What an amazing story.

I have been interested in neural plasticity for a long time, and the ways that the brain defies expectations is fascinating.

Also, Jake's conviction that "he managed to think himself better" is something that I think needs more scientific attention. Obviously, we can't just "wish ourselves well," it's much more complicated than that. And as the article mentioned, the brain is sort of primed to get better, that's what it does. So all the time he was locked in, his brain was clearly healing itself.

But still... I have always felt that the mind/brain plays a bigger role in wellness and healing that we/science realize...

Oh, another thing that always strikes me when I read about this kind of recovery is the time. This kind of recovery takes a really long time....
