My guess is up and over the railing. We have a half wall type setup similar to those pictured above and it's pretty easy to lower things over the side if you can't make the turn at the bottom. | |||

Ours used to be open, 30 years ago. Our washer and dryer made the turn. Then we added a banister. I’m not sure they will be able to come out without taking the banister off!

What's worse than a staircase without a railing? A staircase with a turn, and without a railing.. The view from the top of the stairs isn't much better even though there's a railing...
