My guess is up and over the railing. We have a half wall type setup similar to those pictured above and it's pretty easy to lower things over the side if you can't make the turn at the bottom.

Ours used to be open, 30 years ago. Our washer and dryer made the turn. Then we added a banister. I’m not sure they will be able to come out without taking the banister off!

What's worse than a staircase without a railing? A staircase with a turn, and without a railing..



The view from the top of the stairs isn't much better even though there's a railing...
