Couldn't you also keep the hammers and tuning pin lines straight also, *if* you scaled wire appropriately to keep tensions relatively uniform and smooth and just play with the length and mass of the strings?

Ah, the Baldwin school upright - the piano I cut my tuning teeth on. Built like a tank, still plentiful in many institions around here.
