MA, yes. I can hear very clearly in my head the description that it's like "comma" plus "la," if that helps you at all.

Also, this is an example of one of the usually invisible side effects of news in the age of internet. I rarely watch actual news broadcasts (and then I'm usually watching the Japanese news). So most of my engagement with names in the news is through written media...

OMG while we are having this conversation, I just got an email from another prof here, he's responding to a student but CCing me because she's applying for my program. Anyway, he wrote my name and then in parens added his ... interpretation (?) of how you would pronounce my name... but it's all wrong. hysteric
