There's another reason to wear a mask after you are vaccinated:

None of the vaccines are 100% effective.

And another: other people don't know you've been vaccinated. It promotes generally socially responsible behavior.

That is my thinking regarding wearing a mask after vaccination.

Need to get to a point where herd immunity is assured then we can collectively stop wearing masks.

That's for self-interest. We also don't know that being vaccinated keeps you from becoming infectious. So wearing the mask still protects others.

BTW, wife got the second dose of Pfizer today. No ill effects yet ...

Not a problem for me. I don’t like to brag, but, people seem to generally agree that I am better looking wearing a mask…

On a total tangent, I've noticed that there are more and more ads where the people are wearing masks. In addition, people who are on TV a lot (celebrities, newscasters, some sports people, etc.) are starting to really up their mask game. There are a lot of "fashion" masks now showing up.

It's definitely spawned an entire cottage industry of fancy masks, and most people I know have multiple pairs to wear with different outfits, etc.

Wife seems to have no other ill effects of the second dose beyond sore arm. So far, so good.

P*D, glad to hear your wife has had both shots! Hopefully she won't have any new side effects.

My SIL (works in health care) just got her second shot (yesterday I think). About a week after getting her first shot, she had a weird rash around the location of the shot, like a round raised circle maybe the circumference of a grapefruit. She said it was a little itchy but not painful. She ignored it and it eventually went away. We are all hoping that she doesn't have anything worse than that this time as well!

A friend has gotten both shots. She felt lousy (more than a sore arm) after the first one and feels really crummy after the second one. She's not a complainer. Moderna.

Double-masking — specifically, wearing a surgical mask underneath a cloth mask — may provide an extremely high level of protection against the viral particles that cause Covid-19, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Wednesday.

A year into the pandemic, the report is the first from the CDC that breaks down how well certain mask-wearing techniques work to protect wearers and those around them.

quote:
In the new CDC report, researchers found that in "simulated breathing" experiments, a surgical mask alone blocked 42 percent of particles small enough to be considered "most important for transmitting SARS-CoV-2." One cloth mask did not fare much better, blocking about 44 percent of particles from an unmasked individual.

Double-masking, with a surgical mask and a cloth mask, they found, upped the protection for the wearer significantly, blocking 83 percent of small particles from an unmasked individual.

And "knotting and tucking" a surgical mask reduced a person's exposure to viral particles by about 65 percent....

Brooks said his team was focused less on the material, and more on the fit of masks. While multiple layers may be important, the new research suggests it's really the fit of the mask that's key. "Both of those proved effective in the experimental simulations that we ran," Brooks said.

And protection increased even more when more people wore masks.

If two people are both wearing either the knotted and tucked surgical masks, or if both are double-masked, exposure to viral particles was cut by more than 95 percent.

And speaking of masks...

quote:
Hospitals spent the weekend scrambling to identify and replace counterfeit N95 respirators after learning Friday that fraudulent personal protective equipment had been distributed throughout the state for use by medical workers.

“We spent the weekend collecting the counterfeit masks, switching out to a different mask and fit-testing our staff,” said June Altaras, the Senior Vice President and Chief Quality, Safety, and Nursing Officer for the MultiCare Health System, during a news briefing held Monday by WSHA.

Cassie Sauer, president of the Washington Hospital Association (WSHA) estimated that roughly 2 million fraudulent N95 respirators were distributed to hospitals statewide. The organization has been working with hospitals since Friday to keep the fraudulent masks, which falsely appeared to be manufactured by 3M, out of circulation. Federal investigators within the Department of Homeland Security notified the hospital association Friday of the counterfeit respirators.

Actually, wear an N95 or KN95.

And if you wear an N95 with a respirator wear a surgical mask on the outside. The respirator mask protects you from breathing anything in, but from you breathing virus out. Another mask over it helps that. It's a pain, but I will keep doing it until the all clear is sounded.

I bought a packet of 3 KN95's at Staples...I happened to be there to buy something else, and it's the only place I've seen that had them in packages less than 10 or 20, so you can try them out.

It fits me beautifully, no gaps, comfortable, and good air space in front of you, no glasses fogging. On the other hand, it doesn't work for my wife, who finds it too large and lets her glasses fog. Maybe there are some KN's that are sized smaller.

Also we had our second vaccinations yesterday, Moderna. No waiting, we were in and out in a half hour. Some injection site soreness today, but that's about all.

Well, the side effects have set in. 101 degree fever and chills, but they say this is to be expected. My wife has no side effects.
