Mr. Sphinx and I drove down to Charlotte to visit Middle Sphinx and her boyfriend. It was our first trip out of Maryland since the pandemic, and it was interesting to see things elsewhere. On the drive down, we passed through Virginia, where apparently none of those poor people can afford a mask. We stopped a couple of times (snacks, changing drivers) and hardly anyone was wearing a mask inside the gas station or eating establishments. FEMA should help them. Then it was a different story in NC. The minute your cross the border, you see mandatory mask signs and pretty solid compliance. People would decline to get into occupied elevators, for instance, but people did not wear them outside. The really interesting thing was in restaurants. For patio seating, tables were at a normal spacing, and staff wore masks. But inside, the tables were spaced very far apart. You had to wear a mask when you were not at your own table (e.g. restroom, walking in and out), but not while you were at your table. Servers, hosts, and table cleaners wore masks. Wait times were very long, as you might imagine. Still, it was fun to eat at a restaurant again. We dined indoors twice and the rest of the time outside. Got super lucky with the weather. Also, we stayed in a hotel. No housekeeping, no free breakfast, masks required in common areas. Again, compliance was good. So that all worked out.

That is so good to hear about Charlotte. We have family there and visited there in June. At that time, very few people were wearing masks. The Mecklenburg County numbers were rising. Our hotel was a pleasant surprise, even as I sanitized every possible surface. Right after our trip, the NC Governor mandated masks and walked back some of the "re-opening". We live in Virginia and in our area most people are wearing masks, although there are idiots everywhere. Charlotte is a fun city. Hope Middle Sphinx is having a good time there.
