They ARE absolutely magical. I seem to remember a period during which children were paid for turning in the ones they caught. The bugs' luminous effect was being studied.

The night before my wedding rehearsal I took an evening walk down to the huge park that we bordered. The forest was absolutely coated with lightning bugs. It was so beautiful I woke MFR up and made her come to see.

I have never seen anything so magical before or since. I cannot find a picture that does it justice.

The Italian exchange student who lived with us for a year had never seem fireflies before either. She was enthralled when they showed up.

I liked to sit on my deck on summer nights and watch them float over the back yard. I hope to be doing that again next year.
