I stabbed my right ear with a Q-tip

DanielI stabbed my right ear with a Q-tip
...around noon yesterday.
It hurt badly for five minutes. It didn't bleed.
Eight hours later, I thought I had something in my ear. I put my finger in my ear and blood ran out.
My ear is bleeding. It has been bleeding for five hours.
I went to the ER.
I have to see a specialist.
I was given three pages of general information including a medical illustrator's drawing of the ear. I haven't read it yet.
I was told possible side effects of the injury might be a muted quality or a hyper-sensetive side effect resembling tintinitis.

ADStabbed with a q tip? Hope you heal. But why and how? They're covered in cotton wool.
Ears are delicate, even water pressure can damage them.
The only thing you put in your ear is your elbow.

DanielThe bleeding stopped.
I hope my hearing isn't affected in the the long term.
That would suck as a music lover.

wtgSorry to hear about that, Daniel. Hopefully everything will heal up without any long term effects.

ShiroKuroDaniel, you should definitely consider seeing an ENT specialist.
I don't know if you damaged your ear drum, but I once had my ear drum burst (it was horrible, painful, and terrifying). But it healed and the ear drum reformed (if that's the right word). I was of course seen by an ENT.
But the point is, it's likely that whatever damage you did will heal, so hopefully that will give you some comfort.
But, do see a specialist!

RealPlayerI think the reason we’re always told to keep Q Tips out of our ears is that people might push them in too far. In that small area just inside the outer ear, I think they’re OK.

DanielThanks, everyone.
SK, yes, your story has given me comfort. I'm sorry you had to go through that.

DanielI called the referral given to me at discharge but they don't take my insurance.
Back to the drawing board.

DanielBleeding again today.
I have to visit my PCP for a referral. I've talked to the nurse about it. I doubt they would see me the same day and I don't know if I could go today.
Monday?

ShiroKuroDaniel, I wonder if you need to be seen today?
Does your insurance offer a nurse line that you could consult with by phone?
Did the first doc you saw give you any info about what to expect as you're healing?
In any case, I don't think you should wait.

DanielThanks for the thoughtful and kind post, SK.

RealPlayerAs someone who’s had his own ear problem, you need to advocate for yourself. I don’t know if good specialists are hard to get to in your area; you may have to drive.
Listen, I went to a local ENT when I had a sudden hearing loss and loud buzzing and pulsating tinnitus. Told me too bad, you just need hearing aids. WRONG! This was a real medical emergency called an acoustic neuroma. Later when I saw someone competent, she said steroidal treatment could have helped, but only within the first few days.
So here I am with negligible hearing on my right side because of sloppy diagnosis.

Thanks for the advice.

ADIf your inner ear is bleeding definitely seek professional medical care. In the UK we'd be straight into A&E
