100's of thousands of birds dying off in New Mexico
At least, that's what how many it seems to be - scientists are studying dead birds turned into them.

It's a mystery so far.

No clue. Haven't heard about it on my NM sites. The shocks mentioned in the story (early and very extreme cold weather, smoke from fires in AZ and elsewhere causing early migrations) all seem plausible, and are part of natural cycles in many animal populations. Those seem like decent explanations in the absence of clearer evidence of some more direct alternatives.
