SUV drives through Woodfield Mall (Chicago area)
The guy drove in through Sears and went through a good part of the mall before stopping. Looks like no one was hurt. On the news they showed a map of the mall. The guy went in via the door to Sears, drove through Sears and into the mall where he turned left and drove through the mall till he got to the center. There are all kinds of kiosks in the aisle and of course shoppers walking around. Hard to believe that no one was injured.

Police say one person was in custody after a vehicle drove into Woodfield Mall and was seen on social media smashing displays in the mall Friday afternoon.

There was “no evidence of an active shooter situation,” according to a statement from Schaumburg police.

“At this time, no injuries have been reported,” police said.

Some video and photos from the scene appeared to show authorities escorting someone wearing a long-sleeve red shirt from the mall, with the person’s hands behind their back.

Schaumburg police and fire officials were at the scene, as were FBI officials and officials from the Cook County Sheriff’s office, who were assisting local officials.

“The FBI is aware of the situation at Woodfield Mall and is assisting at the request of local law enforcement,” according to a statement from the Chicago office of the FBI. “There is no known threat to public safety at this time.”

In the video shared on twitter, someone shouts “This is not happening right now,” as the SUV drives through the mall near a Forever 21 store, smashing a display in the middle of the mall as people run after the SUV. The SUV then appears to smash into a store.

“Oh my God,” the person says....

“I got to the center of the mall, I saw this car. It’s a black SUV crashed against a pillar in front of Clark’s shoe store. The front tire was flat. Two firemen were walking around it.” He took a picture and "all of a sudden the tact team came in with assault rifles and yelling, “Get out, get out, get out of the mall.”

On his way out, he saw police walking a man through the smashed doors of the Sears store. He was in his 20s, stocky, dressed in a red shirt and was in handcuffs. “He looked pretty calm,” Thomas said. Then he saw “line after line of police pouring into the parking lot.”

I find it remarkable that people will stand and video something like this as it happens. I'd be running for my life.

Wow, it’s really lucky no one was hurt. Also probably good that it wasn’t a Saturday.

Also, I agree with you WTG, don’t take video, don’t go closer etc. Get out and get as far as away as you can. You won’t know if there were other things planned, other people involved, etc.

That picture.

All for a picture of a guy in a SWAT uniform holding an assault rifle.

Jeez.

No kidding.

I haven't heard too much more about the kid who drove the SUV into Woodfield. One reporter last night talked with the kid's dad, who was on the way to the police station with some medication that the kid takes. Wasn't clear what kind of med or what his medical condition was.

I'm just really glad that the incident was pretty much limited to property damage and that any injuries were super-minor.

Well, it is true that Millennials want stores they can park in front of. Big trend these days. Seems like an extreme approach to it though.

OTOH, they also like to shop in places where there are opportunities to take great selfies.

This one seems to qualify - at least for a while...

Well, to be fair, it looks like the majority of those folks are journalists. I'm assuming your standard shopper doesn't walk around with a gear bag, DLSR, vest, and hard hat.

There are certainly selfie-types (phones, not DLSRs) on the periphery.

I agree with the point, except if you're a photojournalist. Then it's your job to stop and take the photo.
